TRENTON – State Sen. Michael Doherty has renewed his calls for the Legislature to limit the emergency powers of the governor, whom he calls King Murphy.
In a statement issued Thursday, Doherty, R-Warren, one of the most conservative members of the state Legislature, said Murphy’s actions during the pandemic show the dangers of the sweeping authority that states give to governors during emergencies.
“A governor needs to be able to respond quickly when emergencies happen, but they shouldn’t be able to grant themselves open-ended powers as Gov. Murphy has done for more than a year by repeatedly extending New Jersey’s public health emergency,” Doherty said.

State Senator Joe Pennacchio says Republicans are more certain than ever that a bipartisan select committee with subpoena power must be formed to investigate the Murphy administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the only way we’ll get the answers we need to understand what went wrong and ensure tragic mistakes aren’t repeated, he says.
