KEYSER - Child abuse, drug addiction and living a healthier lifestyle will be among the topics examined during Wellness Awareness Week April 19-23 in Mineral County.
Hosted by the ONTRACK! Coalition to address issues that happen in our community, the event will consist of several webinars available for viewing, and also have experts on hand to answer questions. The event will also have a TikTok challenge and will run end on April 24 to coincide with National Drug Take Back Day.
Dug Takes Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and health issue. Misused prescription stimulants, sedatives, and tranquilizers are of great concern, as most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family members and friends. This event provides and opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths by turning in old and used medications.

When spring hits the Potomac Highlands and mushroom season begins, we all tend to think of those we know as the “mushroom whisperer,” the people who seem to be able to find the highly sought-after Morel mushrooms just about anywhere.
You know … the ones who make finding the wild mushrooms look easy, while the rest of us search far and wide and come up empty handed.
One local man’s name comes up over and over in the mushroom community - Zachary Minshall. Boone, as he is commonly known, is out and about every spring putting many miles under his feet each day in search of the mushrooms.

KEYSER - Burgess Farm Service, the community store that has been serving Mineral County for 69 years, has changed hands.
Jeff Burgess, whose family has owned the community-centered store for many years, recently sold the business to two familiar faces around the Mineral County farming community - Tim and Whitney Nester.
Burgess Farm Service started as a simple ice manufacturer and distributor in 1952. Two years later, they became a Southern States dealer. The early days left a lasting impression and the owners of the business never forgot the simple joys of bringing ice to people throughout the area. They have worked to create the same friendly bonds with every customer that comes through the door.

KEYSER - Mineral County Relay for Life has been a long standing event for our area; one that has garnered a lot of volunteers and support over the years.
With teams coming back year after year, the faces have become familiar to many. Now some of those faces are changing, however, and the event is not yet scheduled for this year.
In addition, just like most all other community events, Relay for Life has been facing an uncertain future due to COVID-19.
Last year, the community fund raiser was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, according to organizers, the event can still be held - with specific COVID guidelines.
