Winter Storm Leads Walmart, Amazon and More Retailers to Shut Down Stores and Delivery Stations Samantha McDonald
A deadly winter storm has led to unusually frigid temperatures and slippery road conditions in the South and central United States, leaving retailers little choice but to shut down their stores and other facilities to safeguard their workers as well as customers.
More than 150 million people are currently under weather-related alerts, with the National Weather Service issuing a winter storm warning, winter weather advisory or ice storm warning across 25 states, stretching from Texas to Maine. Big-box chain Walmart, e-commerce behemoth Amazon and hundreds more retailers have subsequently resorted to the temporary closures of many of their outposts.

Touring modernist homes is an annual staple at the Palm Springs Modernism Week, and the online expression is no exception. Coming in two installments as a video series, tours this year feature iconic architecture and lesser known gems in various of the city’s neighbourhoods. Examples include The Morse Residence (by Hal Levitt, 1961), The Cahuilla Hills House by O’Donnell + Escalante (by Lance O’Donnell, 2009), The Southridge Glass House (by William Cody, 1963), Trina Turk’s Ship of the Desert (by Erle Webster and Adrian Wilson, 1936), and Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s Villa Grigio (by James McNaughton, 1963).

Despite the rising tide of businesses forced to close this year, a surprising number of new shops weathered the storm and opened new outposts in L.A.
COVID has wreaked havoc on the city’s retail scene. Some local faves, like Trina Turk, were forced to downsize, closing several locations across the city, while others, like Glossier and Planet Blue, have permanently shuttered all of their storefronts. According to a recent Yelp survey, more than 15,000 Los Angeles-area businesses have closed, with half of them going under for good. But despite the grim outlook, a few L.A. brands and major retailers have opened new outposts. We’ve rounded up some newbies breaking ground and notables extending their empires.
