But no injuries have been reported.  A line of severe storms rolled through Mississippi on Sunday. Meteorologists declared a tornado emergency for Tupelo and surrounding areas.  The mayor said in a statement that damage had been reported and emergency crews were assessing. 

Tornado warning Atlanta: Severe weather batters the South

Severe weather  including a tornado in the Atlanta area   continued to roar across the storm-battered South into Monday night, a day after multiple twisters were reported in Mississippi. In all, more than 100 million people from New Mexico to Delaware were at risk of some form of severe weather Monday afternoon and evening, the Storm Prediction Center said.  More severe storms were expected across the Southeast on Tuesday, forecasters warned. States at greatest risk included much of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee, the Prediction Center said.  Storm hazards Tuesday will include hail, flooding downpours, tornadoes and damaging, straight-line wind gusts of up to 75 mph, according to AccuWeather.

Updated at 7 p.m. Monday Severe storms spawning multiple tornadoes moved across the South on Monday, damaging homes and uprooting trees from Mississippi to Kentucky. A tornado spotted in Atlanta forced thousands to seek shelter, and one man was killed when a falling tree brought power lines onto his vehicle. The motorist was pronounced dead after fire crews cut him from the vehicle in Douglasville, Georgia, west of Atlanta, Douglas County spokesman Rick Martin told reporters. No other details were immediately released. The weather first turned rough in Mississippi on Sunday, where just south of Yazoo City, Vickie Savell was left with only scraps of the brand-new mobile home where she and her husband had moved in just eight days ago. It had been lifted off its foundation and moved about 25 feet. It was completely destroyed.

South Carolina tornado spotted after 1 person dead in Georgia storm: report

A tornado has touched down in South Carolina as severe storms continue to rip through the South, just hours after another tornado hit Atlanta and killed one person, according to reports.  The National Weather Service issued a warning for Abbeville County around 2 p.m. that a tornado had touched down. Local schools held students inside while the tornado warning remained in effect. An initial warning also listed Greenwood, Laurens, Newberry, Union and Elbert counties, but most of those warnings expired by mid-afternoon. (Thomas D Bradley/WAGA) The heightened activity has put states across the South on alert as forecasts call for tornado activity over the next few days, with Tuesday a particularly active day for Louisiana, Georgia and Alabama.
