Your Views: Keep T C acronym | Alexandria Times

To the editor: In November, the Alexandria City School Board voted to change the name of T.C. Williams High School. After a series of polls among students, staff and the public, Alexandria City Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Gregory Hutchings, Ed.D made the recommendation to the School Board to rename it Alexandria High School. The Board will vote on April 8 and the new name will be official on July 1. Cost estimates by ACPS to implement the name change at T.C. Williams total about $325,000. Given the cost, choosing to name the school after the community and returning to the name of the city’s historic high school, until 1935, and not to name it for a person is a wise choice.

How Do You Impact Your Team? I am born and bred in the DMV and I proudly rep it all the time. A graduate of the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, I literally still pinch myself getting the opportunity to cover my hometown team, a team . that I couldn t afford to watch live in person growing up in the area. As a Black woman, I think about old DC, “Chocolate City.” I hope I’m a reminder the DC faithful are still here. A voice of the city, from the city and for the city. To quote my mentor James Brown, “diversity wins, inclusion matters.”

Candidate profile: Amy Jackson gears up for re-election bid | Alexandria Times

Amy Jackson, a current member of City Council and longtime educator in Northern Virginia, kickstarted her council re-election campaign on Feb. 3, her birthday. It was a personal way for Jackson to launch her campaign at a time when knocking on doors and meeting community members at fundraisers are no longer part of running a campaign. It was also apt for a candidate who was raised in Alexandria and pitches herself as a “voice of the people.” “We have an inclusive city that’s always been home to me,” Jackson said. “I want to continue to always find a path to make sure that people feel welcome and that people feel seen. I want everybody here feeling seen.”
