Whanganui s velodrome has been closed because of concerns about the deterioration of the track, with a cyclist fortunate to escape injury after riding through a rotten board.
Whanganui District Council s property manager Leighton Toy said considerable work went into restoring the track to a suitable condition for the Downer New Zealand Masters Games earlier this month.

Of the more than 4000 people competing in the Downer New Zealand Masters Games in Whanganui this week, Don Weston is probably entered in the most events. The Hamilton man is planning to compete in 19 events - if he can fit them all in.
All of them involve running, swimming or cycling, and all contribute to his ability in triathlons.
He has competed overseas. He came second in his age group in the 2016 Snowy Mountain ITU Cross Triathlon at Crackenback in Australia, where he just about ran over a snake.

Whanganui has come alive with the Downer New Zealand Masters Games well and truly under way.
The opening ceremony was held on Friday evening at the Games Hub at the Whanganui War Memorial Centre before the first two days of competition and entertainment through the weekend.
Games manager Rachel O Connor said everyone seemed to be happy and excited.

Games manager Rachel O Connor said the event would be a great showcase of Whanganui. It s fantastic to be able to host the Downer New Zealand Masters Games here in Whanganui, as it brings extensive economic benefit to the city, as well as showcasing how unique Whanganui, she said. A highlight of this is its multiple sports venues with an easy distance to each other, which amazes visitors.
