Midvale Speedway has operated for 67 years

When Midvale Speedway opened in 1953, it was one of three race tracks in Tuscarawas County, but it has long outlasted its other two competitors. In the 1950s, fans of auto racing could attend events on Thursday evenings at a track in Strasburg operated by the Strasburg Volunteer Fire Department, on Saturday nights at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds in Dover and then on Sundays in Midvale.  Stock car racing has really taken this county, as well as the state, by storm in the past couple of years, and now with the third track being built in the county and the Tappan Speedway Inc. making its grand opening this Sunday, local fans of stock car racing have more than an adequate number of tracks to watch the throttle jockeys manhandle their souped up autos, the Uhrichsville Evening Chronicle commented on June 12, 1953, several weeks before the track at Midvale opened.

Dover is getting a new city manager

Listen to this story. He is a retired U.S. Army officer, and was previously city manager in Ashland, Kentucky; Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; Vestavia Hills, Alabama and Cordova, Alaska over the past few decades. He also holds multiple advanced degrees. “Mr. Robinson brings a renewed view of how to make our city greater and build upon what the former city managers have left with us,” said Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen.      The last three Dover city managers came from within city staff. But this time Dover City Council contracted an independent consulting firm, The Mercer Group, to aid in a national search for a new city manager.

Dover city councilor moving to Maine, steps down

DOVER – Ward 4 City Councilor Joshua Manley has resigned from the council because he and his family bought a new home in Berwick Maine, he said in his resignation letter. “Effective immediately, I am resigning from my role on the Dover City Council, as I am no longer a resident of Ward 4, and that makes me invalid as a candidate to serve in my current role,” he wrote in a Tuesday letter to Mayor Robert Carrier. “I want to thank you, the council, and the people of Ward 4 for having faith in me, and helping me through the learning process.” The first-term councilor s resignation came a day after Foster’s Daily Democrat reported Manley had not attended a City Council meeting since early September.
