Teams have traveled to Loudon, a 1.058-mile racetrack, once a year since 2018, so there’s not as much recent data to study like at other shorter racetracks. However, it is comparable to Phoenix Raceway and Richmond Raceway- both shorter, flat tracks. You can also look at the other smaller courses like Martinsville Speedway and Dover International Speedway, as cars were equipped with the low-downforce, higher-horsepower package.

Speedway Motorsports Inc. got many in the NASCAR world riled up this week when it announced July 6 its plans to repave and reconfigure Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Essentially, the longtime stay on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule is getting more banking while its width is getting narrower in an attempt to get tighter racing at the intermediate track.
Drama arose when Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson revealed that they weren’t consulted on the changes and stated that no drivers were. Then SMI did some flip-flopping on whether or not it had consulted drivers or not.

Three road course races in five weekends changed the complexion of the season, not only for the Hendrick Motorsports drivers who swept them and gathered momentum, but also because it causes the rest of the field to shift their focus and find a different balance than they’ve had any season previous to 2021.
For any moderately capable driver and team, road courses allow them to control their fate to a degree we are not currently seeing on unrestricted, intermediate speedways and certainly not plate tracks. That is even truer for the dark horse teams that found their way into the top 10 at Road America. Kurt Busch, Matt DiBenedetto, Chase Briscoe, and Ross Chastain needed those runs to gain momentum for the final run to the playoffs. It could be the difference between being in the top 16 or outside that mark when the final 10 races roll around.
