Torc Robotics selects AWS as preferred cloud provider for self-driving truck fleet
Torc Robotics has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS), Inc. as its preferred cloud provider to handle the scale and speed needed for data transfer, storage, and compute capacity as the company prepares to deploy its fleet of next-generation self-driving test trucks in New Mexico and Virginia. With the growth in test fleet size, number of routes, and sensor capability, there is an increase in data ingestion and analysis needs by engineering teams in the US and in Germany.
Torc is an independent subsidiary of Daimler Truck AG, responsible for commercializing a Level 4 autonomous system that will be offered to trucking customers. As defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), under Level 4 autonomy, a vehicle is capable of performing all driving functions under specified operating conditions.

(Reuters) - Daimler AG unit Torc Robotics said on Wednesday it has selected Amazon s cloud computing division to handle huge amounts of data in real time as it prepares to test self-driving test trucks in New Mexico and Virginia.
Acquired by Daimler in 2019, Torc is developing level 4 autonomous technology - where the vehicle operates itself under specific operating conditions - which Daimler Trucks believes will fundamentally change the trucking and logistics business. The problem we re trying to solve is the most difficult technical problem of our generation, Torc Chief Executive Michael Fleming told Reuters. In order to solve that, you must partner with the best in class.
In the race to build autonomous trucks, Daimler Trucks’ Torc Robotics is partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its cloud services.
Daimler Trucks bought a majority stake in Torc Robotics in 2019 with the express purpose of developing Level 4 autonomous commercial vehicles. Many manufacturers in the transportation sector are betting big on autonomous technology and the data requirements are leading them to partner with big tech companies.
Volkswagen, for example, recently announced that it was partnering with Microsoft for cloud services in its pursuit of autonomous vehicles. That’s because the development process generates petabytes (or, a million gigabytes) of data.
