Arts & Crafts tiles inspired this London home s modern style

Mariell Lind Hansen In a home where original features had largely been either boarded over or hidden behind layers of white paint, the sight of brightly patterned Edwardian tiles was a happy surprise for its now owners, a property developer and his wife, a successful make-up artist. Inspired by their find and its cheerful pink, tan and mustard tones, they asked Tiffany Duggan, founder of interior design firm Studio Duggan, to subtly work the palette through every room of this house. Mariell Lind Hansen ‘It was nice to be able to use all of those colours, but in a different scale and pattern,’ says Tiffany of the terrazzo flooring that she selected to celebrate those hues in a contemporary way. The designer has relished the task of bringing personality back to this Arts & Crafts-era home, adding personality, texture and a more modern layout that works not just for the owners, but their two young children, too.

Face masks can make a style statement, says decorator Carleton Varney

Carleton Varney Special to the Daily News It’s hard to find many bright spots amid the coronavirus pandemic, but I have appreciated the personal preferences reflected in many of the face masks I’ve seen since the health crisis began. I’ve seen masks decorated with polka dots and stripes, while others have flowers and animal prints. One day, let’s hope, those fabrics will again be destined for more conventional  uses for fashions and upholstery but until then, the masks offer us a glimpse into the style choices made by those around us. Of course, not every mask is as distinctive as a floral chintz. Some wearers choose simple black or other solid-color masks. And there’s always the universal hospital-blue ones that are kindly being handed out at almost every shop and restaurant in America.

Everything you need to know about new members bolthole, Carlyle & Co

Pursuits Everything we know so far about Carlyle & Co., Rosewood’s answer to the ubiquitous private members’ club Share The Carlyle hotel-inspired bolthole slated to open on the uppermost floors of Rosewood Hong Kong later this year will offer a blueprint for the eponymous group’s vision of “a new kind of international members’ club”. We venture north of the harbour to discover just what that entails… Hitherto, the Hong Kong ecosystem of private members’ clubs has been split broadly between two camps: at one end, you have venerable institutions catered to the needs of the city’s professionals (the FCC) and those who surround them (the KCC); at the other, a burgeoning array of social haunts meant to profit from the growing number of Silicon Valley types hawkers of crypto, CBD cafes, and other speculative investment opportunities who reside here.

Flowers such as nasturtium brighten up a home, says Carleton Varney

The spring flower that I find so bright and joyous is the nasturtium, whether the variety is bright orange, buttery yellow or even white. The nasturtium will grow profusely in all kinds of soil and gardeners up North know early spring is the time to start growing seeds in the greenhouse. I’ve just spent a few days in the Panhandle with friends visiting what is called the forgotten Florida. We visited Apalachicola and the seaside town of Rosemary Beach. These are beautiful places and all that sugar-white sand! Port St. Joe Beach was, for me, an undiscovered highlight of the panhandle, where the beach is welcoming and quiet. My friends, Erin and Joe Payner, have settled comfortably into their oceanfront home after Joe’s retirement from the Air Force.
