Publisher's choice to shelve some Dr. Seuss books is not censorship

OK, pay attention now: this is a lesson in the First Amendment. And in common sense. Almost 40 years ago in the suburbs of Chicago I organized something we called Operation BookLift. It responded to a plea from an inner city teacher who lamented that many of her economically-challenged students had no books at home. None. Zilch. Operation BookLift worked with schools, churches and parents to collect more than 20,000 children’s books of all types. The goal was to provide these books to children who could take them home as their own. It succeeded wildly. We culled through the vast piles of collected books in a borrowed school gymnasium looking for torn or dirty copies and inappropriate ones. Sure, there were a number meant more for grownups and even a couple of Playboy magazines that got caught up in the collection.

Tom Sheridan: A fable for today

Once upon a time there was a town. A very nice, happy town. Everyone felt safe in their little town. Beyond the town there were inviting fields. People often wandered out into the fields. There was farming and picnicking and even just doing nothing, Then, one sad day, something terrible happened.  There was a beast also wandering in those fields. And the beast was dangerous. The beast had wandered in those fields before. But not in living memory of the townspeople. So the people had forgotten that dangerous beasts had long prowled the deep woods and sometimes even ventured into their comfortable fields.
