Police are investigating after a man died Wednesday morning, seven hours after he was shot on a National City street.
Multiple people called 911 shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to report hearing gunfire on a street of D Street behind Sweetwater High School, police Sgt. Tom Wilkins said in a news release.
Police found the victim on a sidewalk about 30 feet from a bus stop, and he was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Wilkins said. Paramedics rushed the man to a trauma center, where he died about 6:40 a.m.
Authorities are withholding the man’s name until his family has been notified of his death.
Pleasantville had two players that shot 34% or better from three-point range, who were Mason Scheve and Taylon Mount. Even though both players will be returning, coach Tom Wilkins would like to see his team be more aggressive from beyond the arc.
“We gotta get some more scorers. We were always looking for the second scorer to go along with Mason (Scheve) and on some nights Caylor Clark provided that. But we also needed that third scorer that will knock in ten, 12 points per game. Some of these kids will get the opportunity to play next year.”
With Scheve and Mount returning, the Trojans will try to be more efficient from beyond the arc to win more games in 2021-22. The Trojans finished 8-14 with a substate quarterfinal loss to Des Moines Christian.

Kyron Denmark, inset Picture: WILTSHIRE POLICE A YOUNG thief was so drunk he had no memory of going on a burglary spree that ended when he was caught hiding in a garden by police. The following day, having been released by the police, Kyron Denmark landed a stinging blow on the cheek of a street drinker who’d taken off his top and was adopting a fighter’s stance. Yesterday, the 22-year-old was given 26 months in a young offenders’ institution and banned from driving for two years after he admitted burglary, attempted burglary, aggravated vehicle taking and causing grievous bodily harm.
The Trojans will have Mason Scheve and Taylon Mount returning for next season, who were their best three-point shooters. Players that saw action off the bench last year included Jake DeJoode, Parker Sheets, and Jonah Schumacher. Pleasantville will have to find three players to fill the voids of Colby Sandholdt, Caylor Clark, and Austin McMillin. Coach Tom Wilkins tells KNIA Sports that he applauded the team’s effort after the season ended.
“Just the effort they gave every single night. We got blown out in a few games. We had five or six games that we lost by six points or less. We lost two games by one point and one game in overtime.”
