Montgomery County students reflect on qualities of leadership

Much has been said about effective leadership during the days surrounding Jan. 20’s presidential inauguration. Locally, newly-elected student officers at Central Montco Technical High School and classmates from their sending schools view it this way: “A common thread that you will find in all leaders is the ability to be self-aware and possess good communication skills and integrity,” says Cameron Johnson, co-president of Norristown Area High School’s Class of 2021. Combined, these qualities “are the core of a true leader,” observes Johnson, a CMTHS Allied Health major and active HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) member, president of CMTHS’s National Technical Honor Society and vice-president of NAHS’s Black Student Union.

Food organization asks Cornwall for $35,000 to promote local food

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) CORNWALL – A non-profit organization that is working to help build the regional agri-food business sector is asking Cornwall city council for money. Eastern Ontario Agri-Food Network (EOAN) Executive Director Tom Manley will make a presentation to council tonight (Monday). EOAN has been around since 2010 in Prescott-Russell. It extended into SD&G but “retreated” to Prescott-Russell due to lack of funding. The organization works to support producers while getting people to eat more local food products. Manley believes the coronavirus pandemic has only heightened the need for local food sources. Looking to make inroads again, the request is for $35,000 from Cornwall (and $25,000 from the United Counties of SD&G).

Antioch College In January, the News reported on Antioch College Works, a new approach to admissions and cooperative education at Antioch College. According to college leaders, Antioch College Works is geared to increasing educational equity and boosting enrollment at the college, which hit a low of 27 in the fall of 2019. Launched in the fall of 2020, the program helped double entering enrollment, to 50 students. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Antioch College closed its campus in mid-March, shifting the remainder of the winter term online, and continuing online for the spring term. The college also closed Glen Helen to the public in late March. Then, on April 3, Antioch enacted sweeping furloughs, pay cuts and hours reductions
