It will be replaced with a two-story building suited for retail and a possible restaurant in the upstairs atrium. Developer Mark Hunt purchased the building in 2012 for $22 million.
Built in 1965, Benedict utilized a western, mountain style of architecture, using rustic elements of the area, including timber, bricks and stone. Also characteristic of Benedict is the covered walkway along Galena Street.
It was thought to be Benedict’s only known intact commercial building, according to a consultant study.
City officials in 2006 contemplated historically landmarking the structure, but it was early in the local conversation about preserving what’s called Aspen’s modern architecture

That campaign including a trove of never-before-seen footage is now the subject of a new documentary called
Freak Power: The Ballot Or The Bomb. It’s a tale of classic Nixon-era angst, with Thompson pushing for change in a time when “stability” was the guiding principle in American politics. Some might even say nothing has changed, and that Thompson’s maverick libertarianism reflects a dissatisfaction with mainstream politics that still resonates with many disenfranchised Americans in 2020.

Having met at last-generation 40 under 40 practice 6a architects, where they both worked on the RIBA Stirling-Prize shortlisted Juergen Teller Studio project, Tom Benton, 34, and Carlos Sanchez, 37, set up practice together in 2017. Their combined experience also included stints at Jonathan Woolf, David Chipperfield and Dow Jones.
They ground their approach in thorough research, considering the background and ‘cultural setting’ of each project, and not just its physical context, as key. It is, they say, an effort to develop buildings that add social value to their surroundings as ‘frames for life’.
