To investigate humans impact on freshwater resources, scientists have now conducted the first global accounting of fluctuating water levels in Earth s lakes and reservoirs - including ones previously too small to measure from space.
The research, published March 3 in the journal
Nature, relied on NASA s Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite 2 (ICESat-2), launched in September 2018.
ICESat-2 sends 10,000 laser light pulses every second down to Earth. When reflected back to the satellite, those pulses deliver high-precision surface height measurements every 28 inches (70 centimeters) along the satellite s orbit. With these trillions of data points, scientists can distinguish more features of Earth s surface, like small lakes and ponds, and track them over time.

(L-R): Peter J Holt, president/CEO of HOLT CAT; Scott Vouk, and his wife, Kerri Vouk; Tom Vouk; Nancy Vouk; Bonnie Vouk; and Tom the haul driver all pose in front of the Holt 10-ton tractor as it makes its journey home.

This relic, a
Holt 10-ton tractor was the original piece of machinery and a vital part of the Vouk family threshing and lumber sawing business, starting with Vouk s great grandfather, Frank, and great uncle, Bill, in the 1930s. The tractor was first produced in 1919.
. But it didn’t let the app die, instead open-sourcing the code on GitHub. Now, one of the most requested features by the
Tilt Brush community, multiplayer, has arrived – for the Oculus Quest at least – thanks to Rendever’s CTO, Tom Neumann.
Rendever specialises in using VR in places like senior living communities and hospitals to overcoming social isolation, so Neumann knows the power of bringing people together.
“At Rendever, bringing people together through VR has been at the heart of what we’ve done since day one. The first time I tried
Tilt Brush, I was amazed by the level of creative freedom it offered. It felt like a whole new medium,” said Neumann in a statement. “It has a huge community, so naturally multiplayer has been one of the most requested features. When it was open sourced, we saw a perfect opportunity to dive in and make multiplayer a reality.”
