Judge gives accused ‘a chance’ following knife attack in Limerick

A YOUNG man who ‘cut and slashed’ two other men while off his head on drink and drugs has avoided an immediate prison sentence.
Imposing a suspended sentence, Judge Tom O’Donnell told Adam Coleman what he did was “very wrong” but that he was prepared to give him a chance.
Mr Coleman, 24, of Mahon House, Upper William Street, Limerick had pleaded guilty to charges of assault relating to an incident in the Cornmarket area of the city centre in the early hours of June 30, 2017.
Garda Andrew O’Connor said Mr Coleman initially encountered the two victims at a takeaway and that he “asked for a fight” outside.

A FAMILY man who was caught storing significant quantities of drugs and cash at his home has been jailed for two years.
Patrick Byrnes, 40, who has an address at Woodpark, Castleconnell had pleaded guilty to drugs and money laundering charges relating to two seizures which were made just six months apart.
During a sentencing hearing last year, Detective Garda Declan O’Halloran of the divisional drugs unit told Limerick Circuit Court nearly 3kgs of cannabis was found hidden in a tyre in a shed at the rented property on June 9, 2018.
A man shot in the head and chest 10 years ago by a notorious gangland thug has pleaded guilty to possession of a handgun and bullets.
Limerick man Daniel Philips (30), who will be sentenced in February, had dumped the gun from a car while being chased by gardai last year.
The 30-year-old knows first-hand the effects of gun crime after his recovery from the 2010 gun attack was described as a miracle.
Shane Mason, who is linked to the Keane/Collopy gang, got a 16-year- sentence in 2012 for the shooting in which Philips was left for dead.
During that case it was heard how Philips had spent a month in a coma after bullet fragments were removed from his skull and chest.

LAWYERS representing a businessman who was caught transporting a significant quantity of cannabis have disputed claims he was the owner the drugs.
That was the evidence of Sergeant Martin McCarthy of the divisional drugs unit during a sentencing hearing at Limerick Circuit Court.
Greg Glynn, 35, who has an address at Log Na gCapall, South Circular Road, Limerick has pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs for the purpose of sale or supply on May 18, 2017.
Sgt McCarthy said cannabis worth almost €20,000 was located in a car which was stopped near Banogue at around 5.45pm.
House in Limerick estate put under siege during ‘gender reveal’ party

SEVERAL members of the same family have been sentenced for their roles in a violent brawl which erupted following a “gender reveal party”.
Details of the bizarre incident, which happened at Hyde Road, Prospect, emerged during a sentencing hearing last week.
Detective Garda Eoghan McDonagh told Limerick Circuit Court that members of the extended O’Donoghue family gathered on the afternoon of April 6, 2019 for a party to learn the gender of an unborn child.
The detective said the celebrations “continued into the early hours” and that gardai were alerted to a violent disturbance outside a neighbouring house at around 6am on April 7, 2019.
