Relief for farmers for now, but long-term threat remains

Relief for farmers for now, but long-term threat remains By Tom O Mara It was a relief last week when New York’s newly created Farm Labor Wage Board chose not to immediately lower the state’s current 60-hour overtime threshold for farm workers. The relief is only temporary, however. The three-member Board made it clear that it will revisit the potential change next November with an eye toward moving ahead on a lower, likely 40-hour threshold. A lot can happen between now and next November, but make no mistake this is where we stand: farmers and their advocates, including me and many other Upstate legislators, must continue making the case that now is no time to risk the future of any of our farmers.

Senate GOP names Lanza deputy, announces committees

Capitol Confidential By Chris Bragg on December 22, 2020 at 3:30 PM Sen. Andrew Lanza (New York Senate website) Lanza, a former assistant district attorney in Manhattan, represents a district encompassing most of Staten Island, and is one of the few elected Republicans left in New York City.  The appointments follow a Nov. 3 election that that seemed promising for Senate Republicans in the immediate aftermath, but after absentee ballots were counted over the course of weeks, resulted in Democrats in fact picking up three seats, and gaining a history veto-proof majority of 43 out of 63. Lanza gives leadership of the GOP conference a downstate presence; he replaces state Sen. Joe Griffo, who represents a Utica-area district, and recently stepped down as deputy. The leader of the conference, Robert Ortt, hails from a Western New York district.

NY Lawmaker Calls Cuomo s Delayed Aid to Restaurant Owners Insulting

Share Source: AP Photo/Gerald Herbert On Saturday, December 19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order to extend the sales tax deadline for restaurants until March 2021. Restaurants in orange zones have been hard hit after the governor banned indoor dining. Better late than never? No, not even close, some New York lawmakers are arguing. With the finish line in sight, we will continue to support New Yorkers wherever possible and fight to get the federal government to deliver real relief for those who are struggling, Cuomo said in a press release. The same EO continued property tax exemptions for low-income senior citizens and persons with disabilities, two more groups adversely affected by the pandemic.
