That is amusing. Prentious. Obvious as well. I just prefer to keep people from looking at my desks. Cables everywhere (I currently have 18 USB ports active in the desk). Hardware. Test equipment. Coffee cups. Pens & hardcopy. Laptops. Flash drives and external hdds. Phones. Pads. etc Instead, they look at the lights above me or (at home) at a mini kitchen. gsays 1.3.1 Your workspace sounds like my workshop. A litany of unfinished projects; flagon holders from repurposed pallets, a proof of concept star roller for making firework stars, containers of grape, willow and pine charcoal waiting for processing into biochar or aforementioned fireworks…, charcoal retort mark 2 nearly finished, remnants of quart bottles of home brew that became bottle bombs.

Council makes decision on Unicorn pub in Great Rollright

A COUNCILLOR has warned that a derelict pub shut for over 30 years could become ‘a pile of bricks’. Councillors recently made a major decision over the future of the Unicorn pub in Great Rollright, a Grade II listed building. West Oxfordshire District Council’s (WODC) cabinet met virtually on December 16 and decided to enter a legal agreement with the pub’s new owners, whereby the council will not take action on enforced sale or compulsory purchase of the property. Over the last 18 months, the pub, closed since 1991, has had new owners. However, in order to secure funding to carry out repairs, the council has been approached by the new owners and was asked to agree to a period of time during which it would not progress either an enforced sale application to the courts or an application for a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO).

Siouxsie Wiles: Just how worrying is the new Covid-19 strain for Britain – and the rest of us?

Siouxsie Wiles: Just how worrying is the new Covid-19 strain for Britain – and the rest of us? Commentary A new, more infectious strain of the Covid-19 virus has reportedly emerged in the UK, prompting the prime minister, Boris Johnson, to announce new restrictions to try to curb its spread. Dr Siouxsie Wiles explains.  Let’s start with the basics. The genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus responsible for Covid-19 is a strand of RNA made up of almost 30,000 nucleotides. These are code for the amino acids that in turn give us the proteins that make up the virus. Each time the virus enters a new cell and replicates, its genetic material is copied, and nucleotides can get replaced by mistake.

Siouxsie Wiles on what yesterday’s announcement means, and what comes next. First a quick recap. There are lots of different ways to design a vaccine, which use different technologies and have different advantages and disadvantages. If you need a reminder, check out the vaccine explainer that Toby Morris and I put together below. More details are here. According to the New York Times Covid-19 vaccine tracker, there are currently 17 vaccine candidates in phase 3 clinical trials, five in early limited use, and two that have been approved by a small number of countries.
