A Massachusetts man faces more federal charges for steroid trafficking

The Providence Journal PROVIDENCE A North Attleboro man awaiting trial in federal court in Providence on charges from February involving a steroid import and distribution operation, was charged Monday in the same court with resuming the operation, and this time he was ordered held until trial. DEA agents in Virginia, investigating drug trafficking, found evidence that David M. Esser, 47, was still calling the shots on importing, processing and selling illegal steroids. Esser had been charged in February and was out on pre-trial release. He was charged Monday in U.S. District Court in Providence with resuming the steroid operation and laundering money.

Youth-run nonprofit in South Providence raises $6,000, wins $20,000

PROVIDENCE  Youth In Action, a South Providence nonprofit, has won $20,000 in a national fundraising competition sponsored by the Gannett Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the publisher of USA Today, The Providence Journal and many newspapers across the country.  Youth in Action was one of 16 Rhode Island nonprofits that entered the contest, A Community Thrives, in its third year. The Gannett Foundation gave $2.43 million for incentives and prizes for 2020, and the organizations raised $3.341 million during the contest. Top prizes were $100,000. Youth in Action, known as YIA, operates from a house at 672 Broad St. Since 1997, the organization has created a space for teens to say what s on their minds, learn community activism from local leaders and the teens ahead of them, and practice leadership, partly by mentoring younger teens.
