Cardinals Finalize Deal to Acquire Arenado from Rockies
The St. Louis Cardinals have completed their blockbuster trade to acquire All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies.
St. Louis dealt left-hander Austin Gomber and four minor leaguers to the Rockies: infielder Elehuris Montero, right-hander Tony Locey, infielder Mateo Gil and right-handed pitcher Jake Sommers.
As part of the trade, Colorado will send cash to St. Louis to offset part of the money Arenado is due in his contract.

ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals completed their blockbuster trade to acquire All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
St. Louis dealt left-hander Austin Gomber and four minor leaguers to the Rockies: infielders Elehuris Montero and Mateo Gil along with right-handers Tony Locey and Jake Sommers.
As part of the trade, Colorado will send cash to St. Louis to offset part of the money Arenado is due in his contract.
Arenado had been set to be paid $199 million over the remaining six seasons of a $260 million, eight-year contract. As part of his agreement to waive a no-trade provision, Arenado agreed to add a season to his deal, which now extends for seven seasons through 2027.

One week ago, the St. Louis Cardinals were in a state of uncertainty. This week they’re a World Series contender thanks to their recent blockbuster trade for star third baseman Nolan Arenado.
According to MLB Network’s Mark Feinsand, the Cardinals will send the Colorado Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber, right-handers Tony Locey and Jake Sommers, and infielders Elehuris Montero and Mateo Gil for Arenado. Meanwhile, Colorado will reportedly eat $51 million of the remaining $199 million on the third baseman’s contract.
It’s difficult to overstate the impact this trade has on the Cardinals: it’s monumental from every aspect of the game.

When Nolan Arenado was a prospect, no one really knew he’d be a five-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger and eight-time Gold Glove Award winner. He was a second-round pick in 2009 who didn’t make our Top 100 list until 2012, and scouts weren’t sure could play third when he entered pro ball.
The point in bringing up Arenado’s humble beginnings is to show that you never know just who prospects might become in the future. That includes the quartet of prospects the Rockies got from the Cardinals, along with lefty Austin Gomber, for Arenado in the deal that was officially announced on Monday: third baseman Elehuris Montero, shortstop Mateo Gil and right-handers Tony Locey and Jake Sommers.
