DAYTONA BEACH For Tony Costa, a big step toward a “new normal” during the coronavirus pandemic has been returning to a familiar routine as a hospital volunteer at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.
“I really missed it,” said Costa, 93, who has volunteered at the hospital for six years. “I feel like this is my second home.”
Costa, a retired printer who moved to the area from Detroit, returned to his hospital duties in February. Like other volunteer members of the AdventHealth Daytona Beach Auxiliary, his role had been put on hold in March 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic raged.
Some volunteers started to return in October and more have followed in the months afterward.
Practical Magic
When you design a house from scratch, you get to put fireplaces in the living room and in the kitchen. It’s that simple.
“I love to cook,” says Heidi Holland, who, ten years ago, transformed a vacant plot of land in Middletown into this custom home for herself, her husband and their two youngest children. “Before, I was always in the kitchen thinking, ‘You guys all get to be enjoying the fire. Why can’t I have that in the kitchen, and the company?’ Our kitchen really is our hang-out place.”
Craftsman Sam Clidence made the custom counter-height table, which sits flush with the white rhino marble cook island, from antique heart pine from a mill in Georgia. The table legs were crafted from dock wood. Photography by Michael Osean.

That’s what makes the filming location of the show, which wrapped up last week under the code name Pilgrim,” so special, according to fan Aseem Srivastava, 21, of India.
“We’re interested (in) how he is going to showcase this location from the lens of horror,” Srivastava said in one of a handful of recent phone interviews with out-of-town fans.
Millions of “American Horror Story” fans from around the world were hovering virtually over the town as 20th Century Fox crew members and cast filmed scene after scene in the East End of town, the West End, downtown and on Route 6.
