AS the pop world mourns the death of Liverpool legend Gerry Marsden his Hampshire fans will have fond memories of his many appearances on the south coast. He shot to stardom in the sixties but in recent years he became a regular headliner at Eastleigh s Concorde Club. Passion for those timeless sixties songs never waned, particularly among baby boomers whose teenage years had been played out to the soundtrack of those catchy chart toppers. They were the hottest tickets in town when Gerry and The Pacemakers rolled back the musical years at the Stoneham Lane Club. In 2008, the BBC s Radio 1 Big Weekend rolled into the county for a two-day music extravaganza.
Around 34,000 people were lucky enough to get their hands on the free tickets - some 518,000 applied - lured by a frankly stellar line-up which included headliner Madonna and even featured an up-and-coming Adele trotting out the tunes at Maidstone s Mote Park.

It was a slick production - huge marquees hosting the two main stages and an outdoor DJ set. There was a sprawling back-stage area and Madge turned up for her Saturday night slot via helicopter.

LondonJazz News:
You host a radio programme on Solar Radio called ‘Straight-Ahead’. How did that come about, and how did the 606 get involved?
David Lewis:
Straight Ahead was the first show I ever presented on Solar Radio almost six years ago now. A British sax player and good friend of mine,
Mike Parlett, who lives & works in LA, was over in London and presenting his show from our studio. I met up with him, sat in on his show and that was that! Basically, he and Tony Monson (one of the bosses) left at midnight saying “looks like you know what you are doing” and just asked me to lock up when I left!
