Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington announced earlier this afternoon that the Pirates have traded first baseman Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals for two pitchers, right-handers Wil Crowe and Eddy Yean.
Crowe, 26, started three games for the Nationals in 2020, with an 0-2 record and an 11.88 earned run average. He struck out eight batters and walked eight in 8.1 innings. According to the Pirates Web site, Crowe is currently ranked by MLBPipeline as the Nationals’ third-best prospect and as the 10th-best by Baseball America. He made his Major League debut with Washington in 2020 after going 7-10 with a 4.70 ERA in a career-high 26 starts between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Fresno in 2019.

“He felt like 2020 was a disaster for him. He knows it. . We watched a lot of video and he wasn’t slowing the game down with his lower half. He wasn’t staying behind the ball and he wasn’t recognizing pitches, so he was swinging at a lot of bad pitches, and swinging and missing. He normally doesn’t do that. We detected some things and I think he’s back.”
