Compromise possible on Belleville council vacancy

(Photo: Quinte News) The candidate who would have been appointed to Belleville City Council, had council chosen to select the person who finished just out of the running for a seat in the 2018 local election, believes council should reconsider its decision to appoint an ad-hoc committee to recommend a person to fill the position. Appearing on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show today (Wednesday), Tyler Allsopp said it’s become more and more obvious from feedback in local media, social media, and personal feedback to him that council made the wrong decision on the issue and that council should reconsider the issue.

Former Mayor: Belleville council did the wrong thing

File Photo: Ross McDougall (right) with Lorne Brooker at CJBQ Radio. A former mayor of Belleville minced no words when it came to expressing his opinion on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show today (Monday). Ross McDougall disagreed vehemently with  highly controversial decision By Mayor Panciuk to organize an ad-hoc committee to recommend a person to fill the late councillor Pat Culhane’s seat. McDougall said council should have simply appointed the person who finished just out of the running in the last local election, Tyler Allsopp. “I don’t think you should appoint Tyler or the next in line because of tradition. I think what it shows is that the tradition actually makes sense and you should do it because it makes sense and because the electors voted for Tyler.”

Panciuk clarifies comments on councillor input on ad-hoc committee

Mayor of Belleville Mitch Panciuk 2020. (Photo: Quinte News) Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk has issued a clarification to comments he made on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show this week. Panciuk issued a statement clarifying that he did get input from councillors Paul Carr, Chris Malette, Garnet Thompson and Ryan Williams, but that none of them had put forward a name of a potential representative for that committee. You can read the full statement here: Good afternoon Colleagues, I owe all of you an apology (and some more specifically) for a comment I made yesterday on the Lorne Brooker Show. I stated that I had requested input on the Ad Hoc Committee and received none from four Councillors whatsoever. This is incorrect in that I received input from all seven of you. I will communicate that error to Lorne Brooker later today.
