The Empires Return – London and New York City Part 2

The rise of London and New York City as major global cities can be traced in part to investment in high quality transport networks, as we described in Part 1, which helped enable each city and its region to grow both organically, and in its competitive position compared to other city regions. There was another parallel between the two cities – the inter-relationship between the two cities’ public transport operations which started with Americans (and other directors with North American perspectives) – like Yerkes and Ashfield – being involved in London’s transport in the first half of the 20th Century. The post-WWII disinvestment in urban transport, along with other strategies such as planning and density policies, however, encouraged suburban development and relocation to other regions, to the detriment of the classic city cores and the underlying basis for funding public transportation. However, this situation started to change again in the 1980s.

No 20 Duke returns to action against Pittsburgh

Wednesday afternoon Cardinal news and notes

Wednesday afternoon Cardinal news and notes Share this story Spread check: There’s no early line for Louisville-Kentucky yet, but Ken Pom currently has the Cardinals winning, 69-65. The CJ’s Shannon Russell tells the backstory of Louisville freshman Gabe Wiznitzer, which explains why the big man doesn’t take anything for granted. Cardiac Hill reacts to Louisville’s triumph over Pitt Tuesday night. Pitt (5-2) could have played worse. They weren’t particularly effective on offense but most teams would not be while missing so much of their scoring. Another factor? The Panthers were beaten badly on the boards by Louisville (5-1), 45-26. Why so bad? Well, while we will talk a lot about the scoring of Champagnie and Toney, it’s important to remember that they are also the team’s top two rebounders, pulling in just over 17 boards per game. Missing them certainly hurt just as much on the glass as it did in terms of the team’s scoring.

PANTHERS UNDERMANNED IN LOSS TO LOUISVILLE

Last night the shorthanded Panthers lost to Louisville, 64-54. The losses of forward Justin Champagnie and guard Au’Diese Toney will be difficult to overcome.  Champagnie (17.8 ppg, 12.3 rpg) will miss six to eight weeks with a knee injury and Toney (16.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is day-to-day with an ankle injury.  With them out of the lineup, Louisville dominated the boards, with a 45-26 rebounding edge. Acting coach Tim O’Toole said the absences were noticeable on the glass.   Freshman Femi Odukale came off the bench to lead Pitt with 16 points.  O’Toole says the young Panthers are going to have to grow up fast in the tough ACC.
