SAO PAULO (Reuters) - The coronavirus vaccine developed by China’s Sinovac Biotech showed a general efficacy of less than 60% in its late-stage trial in Brazil, a news website reported on Monday, citing two people who seen the results.

Sao Paulo’s Butantan biomedical center, which partnered with Sinovac to test and produce the vaccine in Brazil, dismissed the report as “purely speculative” as it prepares to release a more complete set of results on Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. (1545 GMT).

SAO PAULO - The issues holding up vaccine supply exports from China to Brazil are due to technical, rather than political obstacles, China s ambassador said on Tuesday, as delays to Brazil s vaccine rollout began to grow.
Some have speculated that China, which for years has been the butt of attacks by Brazil s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, may have stalled approving the exports as some form of political vengeance. Brazil is waiting for ingredients from China needed to produce two vaccines locally - one from China s Sinovac Biotech Ltd and another from AstraZeneca Plc .

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Unless the Ministry of Health exercises its option to purchase an additional 54 million doses of the Coronavac, the Butantan Institute could direct the production of the vaccine against Covid-19 to other countries, the Institution s president Dimas Covas said on Wednesday, January 27th.
The contract signed between the Institute and the Ministry provides for the delivery of 46 million doses by April, with an option of 54 million additional doses to be delivered by mid-year. The Butantan has commitments, agreements to deliver vaccines to other countries and should Brazil not acquire these 54 . . .

Brazil’s Butantan Institute announced the import of 5.4 thousand liters of raw material from China which will allow it to produce a vaccine against the novel coronavirus. Three former Brazilian presidents met with São Paulo governor João Doria in a campaign to promote COVID-19 vaccination. Meanwhile, Brazil has banned the entrance in its territory of all travelers coming from South Africa, due to the novel strain of the virus recently discovered in that country. Israel is having outstanding success in its immunization program, and has already managed a 60% drop in hospitalizations for people over the age of 60, after administering vaccines to nearly 21% of its population. Finally, US president Joe Biden decided to remove a bust of former UK prime minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office, at the White House, a move that caused widespread controversy among members of the press and politicians on the other side of the Atlantic.
