A Carman resident says he was disturbed by the number of maskless people he saw when he recently entered a Winkler business, while Winkler’s mayor said he hopes people in this province can start to better understand why vaccine hesitancy has become such a big and divisive issue in his community.

On Tuesday, Sagkeeng Chief Derrick Henderson said searchers with AltoMaxx, a Toronto-based company, had arrived in the community and would begin the work of searching for unmarked graves in the area near the former Fort Alexander residential school, which ran for decades in the community, but was torn down after closing its doors.

“When that press conference happened at the Leg I just said, ‘that’s it, I’m out,’” Brown, a Manitoba business owner said, regarding a press conference by Selkirk MLA Alan Lagimodiere on Friday, where Lagamodiere said that those who created the residential school system thought they were doing the “right thing.”
