Students collaborate with street artists STREET artists will get to work painting murals for the Big Picture Fest later this month. Artists who will make their mark on Frankston this year include Dave Court, GhostPatrol, Brett Piva, CTO, Melanie Caple, Jason Parker, Julian Cla, Wina Jie, and Maxine Gigliotti.  Artist Melanie Caple said she was excited to get to work alongside local students. “I am working with Frankston High School students to develop a large mural. We are aiming for a high quality outcome that not only strengthens and extends the students’ artistic abilities, but also engages the school community and the Frankston community at large,” she said. 

UCP press secretary to keep job while running for Edmonton City Council seat

  EDMONTON A provincial press secretary says she will keep her job in a UCP minister s office while campaigning after hours for a seat on Edmonton City Council. Tricia Velthuizen, spokesperson for Service Alberta Minister Nate Glubish, is running to represent the new Dene ward in the northeast corner of the city.  Velthuizen has launched a campaign website, a political Facebook page and lists her dual roles on Twitter, but declined an interview request with CTV News Edmonton.  In a statement posted online, Velthuizen said she’s been in contact with the Ethics Commissioner’s office to inform them of her campaign, and to make sure she’s following the rules. She added she’ll be taking an unpaid leave of absence closer to the October vote so she can campaign full time.

Oshry joins Edmonton mayoral race, becoming third candidate with council experience

  EDMONTON Former City Councillor Michael Oshry officially joined the race to become the next mayor of Edmonton Thursday. Oshry tweeted a brief statement saying that he had filed his nomination papers so he could “start to build a campaign.” “I have been putting together the structure of a campaign and today I am formalizing this effort,” his statement said. “This is just the beginning, but I do want to say that there is no question that our next mayor will be challenged to lead at a crucial time - we have not encountered this level of uncertainty in a generation.”

January 13, 2021 “There is a vibrant and colorful slice of Jewish life here on the prairies, in one of the most northern Jewish outposts in the world, with people and institutions that continue to provide cultural, educational, religious and spiritual activities for its members, and to honour the history of its founders.” Edmonton, Alberta was first incorporated as a town in 1892. At that time, there were about 700 permanent residents. Founded on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River on the site of the former Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fort Edmonton, it soon began to attract a growing populace. Abraham and Rebecca Cristall, Edmonton’s first Jews, arrived in 1893. Their children, George and Rose, were the first Jewish children to be born in Edmonton. Abe became a successful businessman and helped to bring more Jews over from his native Bessarabia in Eastern Europe. By 1901, there were 17 Jewish citizens in Edmonton. Three years later, Edmonton was incorporated as a city. I
