The Denver District Attorney s Office has announced that Kevin Bui and Gavin Seymour, a pair of sixteen-year-olds arrested last week in the arson deaths of five people in August 2020, will be charged as adults, but a third, fifteen-year-old suspect is set for prosecution in the juvenile system.
These decisions demonstrate how DAs try to balance public demands for justice in heinous cases involving underage individuals against the recognition that those accused of committing the crimes are technically still children. Similar dynamics came into play in the cases of at least fifteen other teens charged as adults for murders that took place in Colorado dating back to the early 1990s.
The Colorado Treasurerâs Office returned money and property valued at nearly $48 million last year through its unclaimed property program.
Colorado, like all states, maintains a program that is designed to ensure that missing money, either though a bank account or some other financial account, or unclaimed property, such as jewelry, coins or other valuable items found in a variety of ways, such as an unclaimed safety deposit box, are returned to their owners.
âStates are required to return unclaimed property to its owner no matter how long it takes,â said Colorado Treasurer Dave Young. âUnclaimed property programs are consumer protection programs that return billions of dollars each year to individuals who did not know they had missing money or valuable property.â

Dave Young, a former Colorado district attorney whose tenure was marred by personal scandal and wide-ranging criticism over the police-involved death of Elijah McClain, is among the latest hires at the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office.
A spokesman for 4th Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen confirmed Thursday that Young was hired Jan. 14. Allen did not respond to a request for an interview.
“We continue our development of a strong and experienced team of seasoned prosecutors and support staff,” Allen’s spokesman, Howard Black, said in a written statement. Black declined to address controversies that dogged Young’s tenure in Adams and Broomfield counties, which ended earlier this year after Young reached a two-term limit.
