Comings & Goings: Time to head downtown - Davis Enterprise

Comings & Goings: Time to head downtown Shares If you haven’t checked out the new Centennial Plaza in front of the Hunt-Boyer mansion at 604 Second St., you should. The highlight is artist Susan Shelton’s 6.5-foot bronze Davis Centennial Seal, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the city’s vote to incorporate. The plaza includes bricks and new landscaping that highlights the historic mansion and its porch, which city officials hope to use as a mini performance venue. Sinisa Novakovic, owner of Mishka’s Café next door, is using some of the space to expand outdoor seating, and is “determined to restart jazz nights at the cafe that we had going for a few years a long time ago.”

A lifelong Californian, he was born in Santa Clara on Sept. 17, 1947, to Jean and Fred Kauffman. He attended school in Sacramento and later UC Davis. Doug would be the first to tell you that he did not excel in school, being unable to muster the focus to graduate until 40 years later. In the interim, he taught himself fluent Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Nepalese, some Hindi and Japanese as well as dabbling in Urdu and Latin. He was also a highly knowledgeable scholar of ancient history, anthropology, entomology, botany and ornithology.

Conversations: Market forces with Randii MacNear

Conversations: Market forces with Randii MacNear Support Local Journalism I have known Davis Farmers Market general manager Randii MacNear since 1980 when she did Aquathenics for pregnant women. She also did prenatal and postpartum exercise classes for Davis Free Clinic patients. She is funny and has a variety of interests. Let’s get to know more about Randii. Robin: How did you get from New York to Davis? I went to college in Ohio and graduated from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. I met my husband, Steven MacNear, there. He was from Stockton, so we moved back to California. We chose to live in Davis. Even though I majored in art, I chose women’s healthcare as my profession. I got a job at the Sacramento State Student Health Center and was there for eight years. I left when I was pregnant with my son, Aaron.

Bob Dunning: The top news stories for 2021 will be …

Elsewhere this week, you have been able to read a comprehensive recap of the top news stories of 2020 as compiled by the expert staff of The Davis Enterprise. Unfortunately, this effort led to several angry tweets from President Trump because not a single story reported that he won November’s election “by a lot.” I will not make that mistake. In fact, one of my goals for 2020 was to get mentioned at least once in a presidential tweet, but I failed. Still, I have nearly three weeks to accomplish that goal before Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20, so please read on.
