The 21st of May marks the centenary of the birth of Andrei Sakharov, one of the great physicists of the twentieth century who was also one of the world’s most courageous and renowned proponents of freedom and human rights. His name nowadays is universally linked with the quest for human rights and democracy.
As the key figure in the Soviet Union’s development of a thermonuclear bomb, Sakharov could have enjoyed a life of privilege and luxury. But to do so would have meant closing his eyes to the injustice and repression around him. This was something that Sakharov, unlike the vast majority of his colleagues in the Soviet Academy of Sciences, would not do.

However, the bill s backers argue it s not about cracking down on what people say but about recognizing Russia s contribution to Hitler s downfall. The Soviet army is a liberator, and therefore a benefactor of Europe, Elena Yampolskaya, the chair of the Committee on Culture, said in a statement. It is possible and necessary to discuss any specific situations, facts, documents. Just not forgetting that the Soviet Union, the Russian people fought the main struggle against the universal evil of Nazism.

When Covid-19 hit Detroit, Bishop Edgar Vann had to close up his sanctuary, the venerable Second Ebenezer Church.
His duty became to use his voice to preach not only the word of God but also the gravity of the coronavirus.
Vann was enlisted to aid the city s Health Department in February to get hesitant residents, largely African American seniors, vaccinated. The virus, he said, has had a brutal impact on the city, and marrying public heath with worship felt natural. I felt an obligation toward making sure that I would not only reach to my congregation but I would also reach beyond my congregation to a much broader influence that I have in the community, Vann, who has been a pastor at the church for 44 years, said in a phone interview.
