The Somerville Theatre Is Renovating, And Bringing Back A Ballroom

The Somerville Theatre is bringing back a ballroom to its second floor. The Hobbs Crystal Ballroom was originally part of the theater when it opened in 1914. The new Crystal Ballroom will hold 500 people and offer a sweeping view of Davis Square. Ian Judge, the Somerville Theatre s creative director, says the space has great  potential. “It has very high ceilings and beautiful windows.  It ll be fitted out to really look like a ballroom with chandeliers, nice draperies and nice fixtures, he said.  Despite being called a ballroom, it will primarily be an entertainment space, he said. We anticipate a lot of musical acts, some comedy and certainly functions and weddings and things of that nature.”

Where to find farmers' markets in and around Boston

Email In 2020, shopping at a farmers’ market in the Boston area came with an abundance of COVID-19 rules and regulations. Cash was discouraged, masks were necessary, and strict social distancing measures were in place. What a difference a year makes. As Massachusetts continues to reopen, many of the COVID-19 restrictions have disappeared from local markets, instead replaced by reminders to stay home if you feel sick and to try your best to keep a distance from other shoppers. Some places  including Brookline Farmers’ Market and Union Square Farmers’ Market are still requiring that all shoppers, regardless of vaccination status, wear a mask. But most have dramatically relaxed their rules for outdoor shopping, instructing visitors to do what feels most comfortable. (Be sure to check with each market for individual regulations, as well as whether they accept SNAP, WIC, and senior vouchers.)

A Running List of Boston-Area Restaurants Still Requiring Masks After May 29

Massachusetts lifted all COVID-19 restrictions as of May 29, which means that restaurants can now stop requiring masks, distancing tables, imposing time limits, and more. Not all restaurants plan to follow suit immediately, though, and there are a variety of reasons why not all customers are ready to ditch masks. For those not quite ready to venture out into “normal” conditions, here’s a running list of restaurants that will still require both staff and customers to wear masks for the time being, regardless of vaccination status. (There’s a bit of a spectrum here, with some allowing masks to come off only while actively eating or drinking and others allowing mask removal once seated at an outdoor table and not interacting with staff. Details are included below.)
