Ardmore resident who died in last week s standoff staged a similar standoff in 2007 in Davidson County

An Ardmore resident who died in last Wednesday’s standoff with Winston-Salem police staged a similar standoff in 2007 with Davidson County sheriff’s deputies. Edwin Joseph Castillo Jr., 34, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers, police said. An autopsy conducted at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center showed that Castillo died of a gunshot wound. During the standoff, Castillo also set a fire at the home at 526 Lockland Ave. where he had barricaded himself. The fire caused extensive damage to the house. When Castillo was 20, he faced charges in connection with an all-night standoff with Davidson County deputies in July 2007.

Heidi Bublitz wasn’t happy. Not one bit. The incessant ring of the cellphone that woke her earlier than she’d intended started the downward slide. The news delivered by one of her employees immediately made it worse. Someone had ripped off an early-morning delivery worth some $3,000 left on pallets behind her store, Wild Birds Unlimited on Hanes Mall Boulevard. An array of decorative bird houses, feeders, seed and supplies for nature lovers had vanished into the early-morning ether. What happened next, though, is what really ruined the rest of the day. Feeling blown off by police, Bublitz and some friends did their own investigating. They tracked down the stolen goods themselves and arranged a meeting to buy some of it back.
