Former Superintendent Fred Mock remembered as champion of students

Davidson County has lost a true giant in the world of education. The former superintendent of Davidson County Schools and long-time community advocate Dr. Fred Mock died on Tuesday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Max Walser, former Davidson County Schools Superintendent and Davidson County Commissioner, said he is experiencing a “flood of emotions” after losing not only a valued colleague but someone who was also a close pal. “Fred Mock was my best friend. He was my right-hand for many years as assistant superintendent, and he supported me in every way possible. He was an advocate for education, but he was also a family man, a good friend, and a farmer. He loved his cows,” said Walser.

After learning Gavin Hill s cancer has returned, the community has surrounded him with support The Dispatch North Davidson High School s Gavin Hill is used to battling opponents on the gridiron and the diamond, never backing down from a fight. The varsity Black Knight football and baseball player took that same determination with him into the hospital when he fought cancer five years ago and beat it. It was the toughest opponent he had ever faced and never wanted another match with it. Hill learned on Feb. 15, however, he will have to fight cancer one more time. The neuroblastoma tumor has returned.

Hilliard Davidson High School in Hilliard, Ohio. | Wikipedia An Ohio school district has acknowledged that an assistant principal s email directing teachers to encourage students to write letters to city council members in support of a local pro-LGBT non-discrimination proposal was not appropriate.   On Thursday, Hilliard City Schools issued a statement after Hilliard Davidson High School Assistant Principal Kristen Clausen sparked controversy for sending an email to school staff last Tuesday that drew the ire of some teachers and a Christian conservative organization.  In the e-mail, Clausen announced that the school would be running an adjusted bell schedule to allow time to recognize Black History Month “on the front end of our 3rd period classes.”

On his drive to work, during his drive to church and even on his drive to the grocery store, he sees work outside his Ford Mountaineer s windshield wherever he looks. It s not a problem, however, to be surrounded by views of his job as a 30-year employee with the Davidson County Planning and Zoning Department. That view provides a daily reminder of the imprint he has been able to have on his home county and why he has spent his entire career here. Leonard loves Davidson County, his co-workers and his job, a passion that helped propel him ahead of the other applicants for the director s position of the Davidson County Planning and Zoning Department. Leonard was named director on Feb. 1.
