Crown Point looks to purchase land to expand trails

CROWN POINT — The city has expressed interested in purchasing rights of way from East Summit to East North streets to expand trails in the city.  The City Council unanimously approved a resolution stating the city s interest in the land during its Monday meeting. Mayor David Uran later told The Times the city is hoping to acquire the land to complete a trail expansion project, and any stormwater improvements along the trail.  We re not buying the property, we re just buying the right of way where the trail s going to go on, Uran said, noting homes will not be affected by stormwater plans for the trail.

Crown Point board deems home unsafe following April fire

CROWN POINT — The city took steps Wednesday to deem a home unsafe after a fire tore through the structure in early April.  The 19th-century home at 812 E. Monitor St. caught fire last month and suffered significant damage,  Crown Point Assistant Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner said previously.  No one was injured in the blaze, however, turtles, snakes and other reptiles were rescued from the home, the original part of which was built in 1880, according to Lake County assessor records.  The single-family home had been converted into an apartment building with three units, only one of which was occupied at the time of the fire, Baumgardner said previously.

Crown Point residents get sneak peek at stormwater retention project

“I’ll see you in heaven.” It was the last thing Al Braccolino, 90, of Crown Point, told one of his daughters as paramedics loaded him into an ambulance Nov. 16. COVID-19 forced him into the final fight of his life. Ten days later, the chair Al usually occupied at the Thanksgiving table would sit empty. The husband to his wife of 70 years, father of three and grandfather of six died on the holiday. Al’s daughter, Sandra Noe, was herself suffering from COVID-19, which she contracted while caring for her sick parents, when the virus forced Al’s hospitalization. Noe, 66, is no stranger to helping elderly shut-ins weather isolation.
