IHCM director Prof David Perera said all seven cases were detected in Kuching district. The earliest case we sequenced tested positive by RT-PCR on April 26 and the most recent case tested positive on May 6, he said in a statement on Thursday (May 20). This is the first instance of the South African variant of concern being reported in Sarawak. Prof Perera also said IHCM had detected additional cases of the P3 variant of interest in Samarahan and Sibu. The P3 or B.1.1.28.3 variant, which was first reported in the Philippines in March this year, is characterised by a double mutation shared with the South African and UK (B.1.1.7) variants.

Covid-19: Local strains may be fuelling infections

Covid-19: Local strains may be fuelling infections Veena Babulal KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia could be home to several superspreading, local SARS-CoV-2 variants that are slipping off the health authorities radar. According to virologists, while the Health Ministry was focusing on imported variants of concern (VoC), especially the dreaded B1617 from India, unidentified local strains could be fuelling the current wave of infections. Professor Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar, who heads Universiti Malaya s Tropical Infectious Diseases Research and Education Centre, said the facility identified two potential local strains recently. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Right now, the VoC is the Indian double mutant, but it is likely that a new variant is fuelling this current outbreak, Sazaly said.
