FLOWERY BRANCH While North Hall wrestling fans were laying claim that they may be the county’s most productive sports program in history, Trojans wrestling coach David Nichols was letting out a huge sigh of relief after his squad overcame a late deficit to defeat Gilmer 37-27 for the Class 3A Duals championship Saturday at the Cherokee Bluff gym.
It was the third title in four years for North Hall and perhaps its toughest as well.
“Gilmer is so tough and the coaches over there do such a great job. We knew coming in it was going to be a battle and it was,” Nichols said.
San Francisco s school board needs to do its homework on Abraham Lincoln

As a distant cousin of Abraham Lincoln, I have a small stake in the San Francisco Board of Education’s decision on whether to remove his name from Lincoln High School. He stands accused by the board’s school-names panel of being unworthy of honor because of his treatment of Native Americans.
I hope the board will pause and examine the actual history recorded by historians in all its context and complexity not just activists’ selection of some facts and Wikipedia history with its mishmash of bits of real history mixed with over-simplification and misinformation.
GAINESVILLE They weren’t looking to make any particular statement. Nevertheless, defending Class 3A State Duals wrestling champion North Hall put on an impressive display Saturday morning in the State Prelims round at the Lynn Cottrell gym.
The Trojans routed both LaFayette (64-12) and Oconee County (70-12) while losing just one actual match on the mat while advancing to next week’s Class 3A State Duals.
“We’re just trying to wrestle hard and keep improving. I thought we were good today,” North Hall coach David Nichols said.
Despite not carrying a 106-pound wrestler this season, the Trojans were impregnable in the lower weights. Christian Cortero, Dalton Thompson, and Connor Free all registered two pins below 126. Jack Whitmire, in two different weight classes, also got a pair of pins for North Hall.
Hidden consequence
Nichols continued: “The physical impact of extreme weather is impossible to ignore. But there is reason to be concerned about another ‘hidden’ consequence of the UK’s increasingly destructive weather – the harm it is doing to people’s mental health.
“For some victims, the psychological toll of flooding is just as devastating as the disaster itself .
“With five million people in England at risk of flooding and climate change intensifying the frequency and severity of extreme weather, a mental health crisis is looming.”
Referring to mental health as the “silent casualty of flooding”, it is important that it is not forgotten alongside the more immediate priorities, he added.
