Councillors have narrowly approved the appointment of an officer to serve Andover’s youth and communities. A motion had been put forward by Councillor Jason Sangster and Cllr Richard Rowles to appoint a youth and community development officer “to work with local communities in Andover to identify local needs and develop strategic responses to these needs”. A vote on the motion was tied, with Cllr Rowles subsequently using his casting vote to pass the motion, with a contract for the role to be decided on at a later date. The motion was proposed at a meeting of the full council on Tuesday, January 26, for the role to have a salary of £35,000 as well as a budget for the position. It was amended by Cllrs Sangster and Rowles to specify that the role would be for a contractor rather than a full member of staff.
JULY IN JULY, the grieving mother of a woman who was murdered in her home by her estranged husband opened up about the heartache. She said her family was torn apart, one year on from her daughter’s death. Thirty-year-old Lucy-Anne Rushton was forced to swallow her wedding ring before she was violently killed by “jealous and controlling” Shaun Dyson, at her house in Suffolk Road on Sunday, June 23, 2019. Dyson, of Anna Valley, was sentenced to a minimum of 17 years in prison, with the judge condemning him for the “violent and brutal” attack on his former partner. Lucy’s mother Myra Simpson said: “We are the ones living the life sentence, not him.”

Did you know that a horrific factory fire in New York City in 1911 led indirectly to the creation of the Social Security Administration? Did you know that the person behind the enactment of child labor laws spent most of her childhood summers in Damariscotta, Maine? Did you know that 180,000 African-Americans fought for the Union side in the Civil War, representing about ten percent of the total force? Did you know that postcards showing photos of lynchings were often sold as souvenirs in the early 1900s? These are just some of the interesting things I learned while taking two fine courses on Zoom this fall offered by the Midcoast Senior College.
