Gov. John Bel Edwards issued a statewide mask mandate for public areas Monday as Louisiana continues to grapple with the fastest spread of COVID-19 it has seen yet.
Edwards, flanked by the state’s hospital leadership during Monday’s announcement, said the state continues to lead the country in new cases per capita as the more contagious, more damaging delta variant of the virus maintains its stronghold on the region.
“Today, I am temporarily reinstating the Louisiana statewide mask mandate for all people, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, when they are indoors and in public,” Edwards said.
“We are the worst in the country, in terms of this current COVID surge, and that is because of the delta variant, which is a game changer and the fact that, quite frankly, not enough people have been vaccinated here in Louisiana,” he added.
