Emma Barnett responds after actress pulls out of Woman s Hour appearance

Okafor, who has appeared in a number of TV adverts, is reported to have said it was wrong for the presenter Reggie Yates to apologise for comments he made about Jewish people in 2017, which led him to step down as a host of Top Of The Pops. During a podcast appearance, Yates had praised upcoming musicians for being managed by “their brethren” rather than “some random fat Jewish guy from north-west London”. Barnett subsequently replied to Okafor in a message posted to Twitter. She said: “Just before I went on air this morning to present a special programme about Me Too – pegged to the anniversary of Harvey Weinstein’s court case – it came to my attention that one of our guests, Kelechi Okafor, had made alleged anti-Semitic remarks.

Emma Barnett caught on hot mic during Woman s Hour questioning if guest was anti-Semitic

Emma Barnett issued a statement in response to Kelechi Okafor s claims Credit: BBC Radio 4/PA Emma Barnett’s first week as presenter of Woman’s Hour has been marred by a racism row after she was overheard accusing a guest of antisemitism. Kelechi Okafor was booked to appear on the Radio 4 programme yesterday in a discussion about the legacy of the #MeToo movement. But as the guests waited to go on air, via a Zoom audio meeting, Barnett began talking to her production team about Okafor without realising that she was audible to the others. It is understood that Barnett could be heard berating team members and asking: “Have we booked an anti-Semite?” The reference was to a 2017 podcast in which Okafor expressed support for Reggie Yates, the BBC presenter who had recently apologised for using “offensive stereotypes” about Jewish music managers.
