It’s been a good few days for Mike Woodson.
After starting his weekend with a recommitment from his program’s best returning player, the new Indiana coach poached an assistant from a conference rival. And really, it’s not just any ol’ assistant coach.
It’s Dane Fife, the former Hoosier guard and longtime Michigan State assistant, who was officially announced as Woodson’s second hire on Monday afternoon. Fife’s appointment comes less than a week after Kenya Hunter, a holdover from Archie Miller’s last staff at IU, decided to stick with Woodson.

One hour after news broke Monday that former IU guard Dane Fife was leaving Michigan State to join new Indiana head coach Mike Woodson’s staff, the Hoosiers received even more good news related to their backcourt.
Former five-star guard Khristian Lander announced via Twitter that he is removing his name from the NCAA Transfer Portal and returning to Bloomington for a second season.
“After much thought with Coach Woodson and my family, I feel it is in my best interest to continue my basketball and academic career with Indiana University,” Lander said. “I want to be one of the reasons Indiana Basketball gets back to being great again. I’m putting my trust into my team, Coach Woodson, and the staff he is assembling.”

Since Michigan State last had an assistant basketball coaching position open, there have been two new presidents, a new pope and three new Detroit Lions coaches.
That speaks to the stability of coaching under Tom Izzo and the desirability of an assistant coaching job in East Lansing.

A busy afternoon for Indiana just got even busier.
Following the hiring of former Michigan State associate head coach Dane Fife as an IU assistant and the announcement that point guard Khristian Lander would be withdrawing his name from the transfer portal to return to the Hoosiers, Lander s fellow freshman, ultra-athletic forward Jordan Geronimo, made the same decision, taking his name out of the portal and announcing he ll play for Indiana next season. I believe in Coach (Mike) Woodson, Geronimo wrote in a social media post. Let s get to work.
