Fulton St. hustled to open the facility on Friday night, moving up the opening date originally scheduled on Monday to help people got off the street overnight during the forecasted frigid weather. The shelter organized by the Center of Hope Advisory Board and Gloversville Free Methodist Church will be operated by the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, an Albany based organization that provides services and assistance to the homeless and low-income community that includes the operation of Danielle’s House in Amsterdam. The code blue shelter at 144 E. Fulton St. will take in adults age 18 and older, overnight only from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. when code blue orders are issued by the Fulton County Department of Social Services through April 31.

Fulton St. Tuesday’s council vote came after months of wrangling over the issue of where a homeless shelter should be established in Gloversville. “We’ve been working very hard on finding an alternative location that would be acceptable for the Code Blue shelter, other than the 33 Bleecker St. site,” Mayor Vince DeSantis told the council. “This is enabled by virtue of the change in the zoning law that we effectuated Jan. 1, which allowed Code Blue shelters in the commercial zone.”

Fulton St. Mayor Vincent DeSantis and the city worked with the Center of Hope Advisory Board to secure the East Fulton Street site for the operation of an emergency overnight shelter this winter.
