Mercantile Bank officially transfers building to Ionia library

IONIA A historic building in downtown Ionia has officially been gifted to the community library.  Mercantile Bank of Michigan donated its former branch at 302 W. Main St. In downtown Ionia to the Ionia Community Library. A formal transfer took place Monday, April 12. ICL Director Dale Parus described receiving the building as a “game-changer.” ICL will place a proposal on the ballot in the November election asking voters to approve a millage to operate a library in the commercial building. Parus said the building gives ICL “a fighting chance” at winning in November.  “It gives us a big step forward toward making those larger plans,” Parus said. “If we can convince the folks in November that this is a worthy plan and I think it is. the sky’s the limit after that. We’ll be able to be a presence down here. people will be up and down the street.” 

Mary Youngblood Dooley

Mary Youngblood Dooley, 76, of Gettysburg and originally from Montrose, Pennsylvania, passed away on Monday, April 5. She was the daughter of the late Jake and Jerry Youngblood and was born on Oct. 18, 1944, in Binghamton, New York. Mary was a 1966 graduate of West Chester University and taught in both Maryland and Pennsylvania. She finished her teaching career as an English as a Second Language teacher for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit. When summarizing her teaching career, she often said, “I was a teacher for 33 years and never had a boring day.” Mary is survived by her daughter, Molly Wiles and son-in-law, Steve, and son, Dan Dooley. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sarah, Jake, and AJ Wiles. She was predeceased in 2013 by her husband of 47 years, Jim Dooley, who was a popular area basketball coach. Ellie Slama Wins Individual Title At Silverado Showdown

Apr 7, 2021 NAPA, Calif. – Ellie Slama won an individual title for the third time in her Oregon State career, this time at the Silverado Showdown on Wednesday.   Slama, a senior from Salem, Ore., finished with an 8-under 67-68-73 208 and outlasted a competitive field that included eight Pac-12 teams to win the individual crown by one stroke over Allisen Corpuz of USC (7-under 70-71-68 209).   As a team, Oregon State finished in a season-best third place in the 13-team field with a 21-over 291-291-303 885 at the par-72, 6,192-yard Silverado Country Club.   No. 11 USC won the team title with a 2-under 862 and No. 37 UCLA finished second with a 3-over 867.
