Executive Director Danielle Tessier said each animal arrives with a story and a second chance at life. “Certainly, most of the animals that have come to us would have died, and unfortunately, they would have died deaths that were very, very unpleasant. I mean it s not pleasant starving to death,” Tessier said. At the spacious, rolling 1,000-acre farm, the animals are nursed back to health and are continuously cared for by many volunteers.

A farm animal sanctuary in Brooks expands Peace Ridge Sanctuary has grown by almost 250 acres, allowing it to expand its wildlife rehab area and build a new large animal barn. Peace Ridge Sanctuary, known for rescuing animals from the state’s worst abuse cases, now covers more than 1,000 acres in rural Brooks. It’s a fitting milestone as the nonprofit marks its 20th anniversary.

Our work spaces have changed completely. Our interactions with others have been cut to a fraction of what they were this time last year. Conflicts have been exacerbated by months of turmoil and troubling news headlines. Overcoming these additional challenges is hard. With the push from everyone around us to stay isolated and make difficult changes to our day-to-day lives in order to stay safe, it has become easy to fall into a negative or selfish headspace. For many of us, remembering to be kind to everyone is not at the forefront of our minds.
