Belize Mayors’ Association Holds Final Meeting for 2018-2021 Cohort of Mayors
The Belize Mayors’ Association members wrapped up their terms in office with a final meeting on Friday in Belmopan. The Ministry of Local Government recognized those mayors who are not contesting the upcoming elections. These include former mayor Kevin Bernard, now member of the National Assembly and Minister of Youth, Sports and E-Governance, who has served as mayor of Orange Walk Town since 2012. Others who were given awards for their service include Mayor Khalid Belisle of the Belmopan City Council, Mayor Daniel Guerrero of the San Pedro Town Council, Mayor Ashton Mckenzie of Punta Gorda Town and Mayor Marconi Sosa from Benque Viejo. Minister Bernard thanked the mayors on behalf of Minister of Local Government Oscar Requeña, who supports critical municipal development initiatives that have been on the table for the last few years. The Municipal Race in San Pedro Town
The municipal elections are thirty-three days away. Over the past few weeks, the major political parties have been releasing their official slates for the municipalities across the country. In San Pedro Town, both the U.D.P. and P.U.P. mayoral and councillor candidates have been working the streets to poll the residents about their concerns and share their manifesto goals for the island town. News Five’s Duane Moody caught up with some of them on the campaign trail.

The United States Army has adopted the SIG Sauer Tango6T 1-6x24mm as its new dedicated optic for squad designated marksmen.

After 34 years of bringing holiday joy to San Marcos, the Sights & Sounds of Christmas Festival canceled its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not allowing this difficult time to take away the holiday spirit, the city has arranged alternative plans to light up the community.
The Sights & Sounds Festival, typically held in City Park, consists of carnival-like attractions, as well as live music, food and light decorations. However, due to health concerns revolving around the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, festival runners are unable to host the event this year.

After spending 18 years in prison,
Myon Burrell was released on Tuesday (December 15). He was greeted by family and advocates outside of the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater in Bayport, Minnesota.
In 2002, at age 16, Burrell received a life sentence following the death of
Tyesha Edwards, an 11-year-old girl killed by a stray bullet.
The Minnesota Board of Pardons commuted his life sentence, reducing it to 20 years. Burrell, now 34 years old, will spend the remaining two years on supervised release, according to
His case sparked outrage from criminal justice reform advocates and was a point of contention in Senator
Amy Klobuchar’s presidential run. Klobuchar was the Hennepin County attorney at the time of Burrell’s conviction and led the office. Her “tough on crime” campaign message was criticized in light of her involvement in Burrell’s case following further investigation.
