For northern nationalists, Bobby Sands’s election transformed politics. Within two years all leading Sinn Féin figures had been elected.
Forty years ago, on April 9th, 1981, Bobby Sands was elected MP for Fermanagh/South Tyrone with 30,493 votes. His election turned out to be the watershed of the Troubles.
There were major events both before and after that election but they didn’t alter the trajectory of the Troubles: Sands’s election did.
He had gone on hunger strike on March 1st that year, exactly five years after the British government’s policy of criminalisation took effect. Until 1976 prisoners convicted of so-called “scheduled offences” were categorise

Harsha may be a good commentator but he is often too full of himself. His IIM MBA fuelled hubris shows itself all too often and is rather annoying. The fact that he hasn t played anything besides street cricket also runs against him. For me one can t comment on a game unless one has played it at the highest level.

ON PAGE 9 of The Irish Times of Friday 27 February 1981, a headline read: “H-Block fast generates little pressure.”
The report outlined how a “low-key atmosphere prevail[ed]” in the run-up to the latest hunger strike. It said the IRA leader in the H-Blocks would be starting the strike alone before being joined at regular intervals by other prisoners.
The article ended: “In the face of an unmoved British government, the straight demand for ‘political status’ is seen by some as ‘unreal’.”
