Sunderland 1-1 Hull City
Aiden McGeadyâs first goal for Sunderland in over a year was not enough to claim three points against second-placed Hull City.
Despite enjoying more of the possession and creating a number of half chances, the Tigers returned to Humberside with a point in the battle for promotion in Sky Bet League One.
It was Hull who took the lead in the 13th minute when Reece Burke made the most of Lee Burgeâs dropped catch, moments after the Sunderland goalkeeper suffered a head injury that required treatment.
But eight minutes later Sunderland, who showed plenty of nice touches throughout, levelled when McGeady was on hand to head in Jack Diamondâs delivery.
Northampton Town 0-0 Sunderland
Sunderland started 2021 with a point on the road following a goalless draw at Northampton Town on Saturday.
The best opening of the first 45 fell to the Lads in the opening stages, but Charlie Wykeâs glancing header flicked just wide of the post.
Lee Johnsonâs men were scarcely troubled at the back, as Keith Curleâs side elected to sit back and keep the Black Cats at bay.
And it was an approach that ultimately paid off, as a resilient and tenacious display frustrated the Lads who were unable to find a winner.
Johnson made one change from the starting XI that lined up in the Ladsâ pre-Covid-19 outbreak win over Lincoln City, as Dion Sanderson replaced Callum McFadzean.
