Coleman is among the record number of women, black and LGBTQ lawmakers serving in Missouri Legislature

Missouri’s 2021 legislative session will be barrier breaking.  The number of women serving is at an all-time high with 52 female lawmakers. It will have the most ever Black lawmakers serving with 25. There will be five openly LGBTQ lawmakers which is believed to be another record. And the first Asian American woman was elected to the Legislature. It’s a long way from the historic firsts achieved roughly a century ago, when Walthall Moore, a Republican from St. Louis, became Missouri’s first Black state lawmaker in 1920 and two years later in 1922, when Sarah Lucille Turner and Mellcene Smith became the first women elected to the Legislature.

Republican lawmakers seek to curb local control over COVID-19 health orders By Tessa Weinberg Local control. On Wednesday, a Missouri Senate committee debated a slew of bills filed by Republican lawmakers that aim to strip local authority from city and county officials and health boards during states of emergency. Some bills would limit how often local public health orders and regulations can be implemented, including no more than a cumulative 30 days every 60 days or 14 days in a two-year period, unless approved by the legislature. Others would impose a 30-day comment period on such orders and require they be approved by local officials. Some would limit restrictions on the free exercise of religion.

First responders, anyone over 65, those with certain conditions to start receiving COVID vaccine in Missouri

First responders and emergency medical services can receive their initial dose of a coronavirus vaccine, with Missourians 65 years and older and those with underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk eligible to receive their first doses Monday. Missouri state health officials activated the next tiers of “Phase 1B” residents in light of an expected increase in vaccine supply following the Trump administration’s announcement that second doses would not be withheld. The first two tiers alone will be approximately 2.7 million residents as the state continues to work through healthcare workers and long-term care facility residents and staff included in the first wave of vaccinations.
