Posted On May 19, 2021 Bethel Elementary students, from left, Drew West and Christian Alexander and from right, Izak Smith and Eli Johnson competed in the Great Computer Challenge virtually last weekend. West and Alexander competed in Desktop Publishing and Smith and Johnson in Desktop Presentations, and both teams received honorable mentions. Local Students Compete In Virtual Great Computer Challenge Details Published: 17 May 2021 Over the weekend local students gathered virtually with ODU and WHRO Public Media staff for the 36th annual Great Computer Challenge (GCC). Congratulations to all the winners! Students from the Governor s School placed first in the Level 4 Graphic Design category. The GCC is a joint project of WHRO, the Consortium for Interactive Instruction and Old Dominion University that provides an opportunity to recognize student achievement, foster teamwork and introduce students to a college environment. Teams of students compete in categories such as Desktop Publishing, Object-Oriented Business Programming, Graphic and Web Design, Music Composition, Video Editing and more. Categories were a bit limited this year due to the event having to be virtual, but students still enjoyed the opportunity to test their skills.

Orchard Glory

At an old fruit orchard, I sat in the afternoon sun in a quiet, sunlit room. I laid out a still-life arrangement, the fruits of the harvest – ripe lemons, pomegranates, mandarins. plucked from trees I had walked amongst, chosen for their colour, their aroma, their flavour. Selected amongst thousands of others (mostly green), and gathered together on the table, with much care and thought. Likewise, paint colours were laid out on my palette - reds, oranges, yellows, greens and browns - brushes chosen, my space prepared with a towel and water for cleaning. The enjoyment I feel and the beauty I find in creating art simply cannot happen without preparation - whether it is time marked out, inspiration sought, skills developed, materials gathered or space prepared.
