Poll: What Utahns think about the job President Joe Biden is doing far

Deseret News Share this story Andrew Harnik, Associated Press Utahns don’t appear to be warming up to President Joe Biden as his approval rating took a downward turn in the latest Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll. And Republicans in the state especially find the performance of the new president dismal a little over two months into his first term. The poll shows 40% of voters in the state approve of the job Biden is doing, while 56% disapprove, including 46% who strongly disapprove. The overall approval and disapproval numbers are 5 points worse than they were just last month. The situation at the U.S. border with Mexico and the growing perception that the president is acting in a way that polarizes rather than unites the country are two of the main reasons his numbers are down, independent pollster Scott Rasmussen said.

But Dr. Kristin Dascomb stopped short of saying the mask mandate should continue during a virtual news conference Friday. Intermountain Healthcare is one of many entities that will still require masks, a list that includes Salt Lake City as well as in state and some local government buildings.

Deseret News But 44% say they want anti-COVID-19 measure to continue Share this story Annie Barker, Deseret News Utahns are split over whether the statewide mask mandate put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 should end on Saturday, and only a few believe the Utah Legislature’s decision should be up to just elected officials, according to a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll. Results released Thursday showed 44% of Utahns believe the mask mandate should continue beyond the April 10 date set in a new law passed before the 2021 Legislature ended last month, while 20% said the date was reasonable, 14% said it should have been sooner, and 17% said there should have never been a mandate.

Why does this new poll show a dramatic surge in optimism about COVID-19?

SALT LAKE CITY More than half of Utahns now see life returning to normal no later than this fall after more than a year of COVID-19 restrictions, according to results released Tuesday from a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll, a much more optimistic outlook than earlier this year. And once the pandemic is behind them, most Utahns say they re done wearing masks even to prevent the transmission of other diseases. Just 36% said they were very or somewhat likely to wear a mask post-pandemic, while 61% are not very or not at all likely to don a face covering again.
